James Cameron has brought us everything from “Terminator” and “Titanic” to“Avatar.” Now, the director has really gone where no one has ever gone before: to the deepest part of Earth’s ocean. And he went alone.
Cameron’s sub, the Deepsea Challenge, was designed as a one-man deep sea submarine. Weighing in at 12 tons, the sub was specially constructed for Cameron and is equipped with four deep ocean HD cameras that should bring us back some fantastic footage of his feat.
.
Cameron descended yesterday just southwest of Guam, directly above the deepest point in the Pacific Ocean, the Marianas Trench. The trip down to the bottom took 2 hours and 36 minutes. At 3:10 PST, he tweeted (yes, from the bottom of the ocean)“just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you.”
.
National Geographic, who sponsored the sub’s expedition, tweeted on the@DeepChallenge Twitter account, “@JimCameron is the first person in history to solo dive to the deepest place on Earth, a record 35,756ft/10,898m.” That ranks right up there with landing on the moon. It is, after all, one of the last unexplored frontiers right here on planet Earth. The return trip to the surface took just 70 minutes.
.
The dive was the culmination of a seven year project for Cameron. He plans on using the footage for two separate projects: a 3D film for theaters and a television special for National Geographic. Cameron is the first to venture into the Challenger Deep (the deepest portion of the Marianas Trench) since 1960, when U.S. Navy Captain Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard reached the valley. Their stay was short lived compared to Cameron’s, who spent hours on the bottom collecting samples and taking various environmental readings.
.
Congrats to James Cameron and the NatGeo team! I can’t wait to see the film footage that comes out of this voyage. What about you? Sound off in the comments below!
